The new Grizzly Bear Exhibit has begun! The old exhibit is too small, all concrete, and below standards for housing these magnificent animals. The new natural ½ acre exhibit will be the flagship of the modern Pocatello Zoo.
During the first two weeks of October 2009, 1,730 truckloads of dirt were hauled to the site and graded into the rough contours that form the new bear habitat. The City of Pocatello Street, Water, and Engineering Departments have donated all their labor and heavy equipment in getting this exciting project “off the ground”. They will also be helping with utilities.
The new Grizzly Bear Exhibit is estimated to cost about $900,000, which may include public restrooms. The Zoo has approximately $645,000 in cash, pledges, and expected grants. A few substantial portions of the project may be completed with in-kind labor and materials, especially for landscaping. Construction documents will be finalized for bidding the bear viewing area and holding building in January, for construction this spring. Our goal is to raise $100,000 more in the next six months to help fund the grizzly bear stream and fishing pond, as well as the public restrooms.
