WASTEWATER PRETREATMENT

Pocatello's pretreatment program protects the wastewater treatment plant from contaminates which could interfere with the treatment processes. Businesses and industries are regulated as to the discharge of metals, oils grease, toxic organics, pH and other conventional pollutants in limits acceptable to Ordinance No. 2836
Sewer Regulations
. If you discharge anything other than residential domestic sanitary wastewater you must contact WPC about a permit.

GREASE ABATEMENT

Do Not Pour Oil & Grease Down the Drain

Do not pour fats, oils and grease from cooking down the drain. All cooking oils (salad oil, frying oil, bacon fat, marinades. etc.) need to be poured into a container and disposed of in the garbage. You may use cat litter or used coffee grounds to absorb the liquid in the container.

Do not not use the toilet as a wastebasket. Place food scraps in waste containers or garbage bags for disposal with solid waste, or start a compost pile. Dry wipe all potS and dishes. Use a paper towel or napkin to remove greasy leftovers from pots and dishes prior to washing in the sink or dishwasher.

Do not use the sewer as a means to dispose of food scraps. Place leftover foods, fat trimmings from meat, etc. in the trash can instead of the garbage disposal.

Never dump motor oil or other lubricants down the drain. Take them to a collection point.

These suggestions can save you money too! Most sewer back-ups occur between your home and the City's sewer main, where the home owner is responsible for correcting the problem. Avoiding blockages in your line means avoiding plumbing bills.

If you experience a problem. First call Water Pollution Control Department at 234-6256 or after hours at 681-7131. The City will investigate the problem and inform the calling party if the problem is in the City's main line or if the problem exists in a privately owned line. This could save the homeowner unneeded sewer service costs.

For questions about what may or may not be poured down a drain or for information about Pocatello's sanitary sewer system please call 234-6256
