MUTT MITT - CLEAN UP AFTER YOUR DOG CAMPAIGN EXPANDED

Signs to be Installed Near Mutt Mitt Dispensaries

For several years, the Pocatello Animal Control and Parks and Recreation Departments have coordinated a campaign to encourage pet owners to clean up after their dogs on public lands, particularly City parks, and on private property belonging to others.

In 2007, the number of locations for "Mutt Mitt" bags (bags to pick up after pets) was expanded.  This expansion was part of an education campaign associated with requirements of the newly issued federal National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System storm water permit issued to the City of Pocatello.  This year the City is continuing its campaign to educate pet owners about the necessity to clean up after their pets.  Signs encouraging pet owners to "Get Caught Holding the Bag," are being placed at all Mutt Mitt locations across the city.  The sign will also be displayed on one Pocatello Regional Transit bus and will be added to additional busses in the future.

Reducing the amount of animal fecal material that is washed into the streets, storm drains and subsequently the Portneuf River will help the City achieve the requirements of the federal storm water permit, which has strict numeric requirements for fecal coliform bacteria present in all animal feces.

Pet owners are encouraged to call Animal Control at 234-6156 if they have questions regarding the campaign or issues related to cleaning up after their pets.
