POCATELLO COMPETES IN “CANS FOR CASH”
Nationwide Competition Runs October 1 through 31, 2008
The City of Pocatello, with help from Idaho State University’s Idaho Progressive Student Alliance (IPSA), is again competing in a nationwide recycling competition called “Cans for Cash™ City Recycling Challenge.” This competition is sponsored by the US Conference of Mayors, Novelis Corporation and Keep America Beautiful, Inc.
Each city of similar size is competing for a $5,000 cash prize by collecting the most total tonnage of recyclable aluminum cans during the month of October. Pocatello’s division is cities with population 50,000 to 99,999. If Pocatello wins, the money will be used to help with the City’s curbside recycling program scheduled to being in Spring 2009, as well as for other recycling projects.
In order to win the competition, Pocatello needs your cans! During the month of October, save your aluminum beverage cans and either take them to one of the City’s six drop-off recycling sites or to Pacific Recycling or Western Recycling. Last year Pocatello collected 27,076 pounds of cans, which was a record amount for the community. However, the winning city in our division, Des Plaines, Illinois, collected 1,120,660 pounds. Pocatello can easily collect over a million pounds of cans, but it will take everyone’s help.
Winning this competition is based solely on the participation of the citizens in our community. Please save your aluminum beverage cans and recycle them from October 1 through 31, 2008. Recycling aluminum beverage cans not only helps the environment, but can also help your community’s recycling efforts.
