WHITMAN ST. RECONSTRUCTION

On June 2nd the City will begin construction of the Whitman St. improvements.   The work will include new water main lines from the river to Lincoln Avenue.  Water services to each home will also be renewed up to the meter.  The street will be widened 5 feet on each side by placing new curb and gutter between Grant Avenue and Lincoln Ave.  The widening will result in a 40 foot wide street which will allow parking on each side and room for two vehicles to pass safely.  After the water lines and curb is installed the roadway between Grant Ave and Lincoln Ave. will be stripped of the existing asphalt, reshaped, and repaved.  New base aggregates will be added to the street section as necessary before paving.  New trees will be planted in the area between the sidewalk and curb upon completion of construction.  The Tentative schedule for completing these improvements is shown below:

Schedule:

Week of June 2nd - Remove pavement for the new water line alignment. This will be accomplished with a 7 foot wide grinder and the millings will be left in place so the trench will be passable with a vehicle.  Water line construction will begin at the bridge and work up hill, hopefully getting through intersection at Grant and Whitman by the end of the week.  The street should be passable except in the immediate area of waterline construction.  Trenches will be filled each night.  The curbs between bridge and west side of Grant Ave. will remain.

Week of June 9th – Continue replacing water main line between Grant Ave. and Johnson Ave. Remove curbs and driveway approaches on both sides of the street as water main line progress up the street.  The roadway should be passable in the evenings and weekend.

Week of June 16th- Continue replacing water line and installing new service lines between Johnson Ave and Lincoln Ave. Also, remove curb on both sides of the street. Prepare curb base and construct new catch basins between Grant Ave .and Johnson Ave.  Pour new curb and gutter near the end of the week between Grant Ave. and Johnson Ave.  Pour Driveway approaches one or two days after the curbs are poured.  Curbs will require a minimum of seven days to cure before cars can drive over them so driveway access will be prohibited during this time.

Week of June 23rd – Chlorinate and test new main water line.  Begin connecting new service lines between the bridge and Lincoln.  Prepare curb base and construct new catch basins between Johnson Ave and Lincoln Ave.  Pour curb and approaches near the end of the week.  Minimum 7 day cure time on new curb before traffic can cross it.

Week of June 30th – Remove any remaining pavement.  Haul in and shape base aggregates and repave between Grant Ave. and Lincoln Ave. near the end of the week.

Repave trench between the river and Grant Ave.

Week of July 7th – Clean up and take care of planter strip.  Plant trees (it may be better to postpone tree planting until fall)

Please realize this is a tentative schedule and we will work hard to meet or exceed it, but, as with any construction project many factors can affect the schedule so we would ask that you be patient.  The City will try to inconvenience you as little as possible but there will be times when you won’t be able to access your driveways or park on the street next to your home.  We will coordinate with the sanitation department for garbage pick up and keep access for emergency vehicles available at all times.  There will be some short periods when the water will be shut off and we will try to give you a days notice before any planned outage. Please give me a call at 234-6212 or Steve Szymanski at 705-6301 if you have any questions or concerns during the project.

Sincerely
